    Leave / holidays while contracted

What people’s thoughts on this? Is the general consensus to work as much as you can and holiday while benched? Appreciate many variables to factor in, length of contract, client needs, personal need for a holiday... Just wondering if many people are comfortable saying they won’t be available for X weeks due to some holidays while they are contracted.

I go with the latter and will be week after next in fact, especially as I am not benched that often for too long (without meaning to be whatever). Even though we are contractors I still like to take time off and spend time with the family.

Depends on contract length I guess. If 3 months or so then taking leave (unless it was already booked prior to taking contract and you advised client of this) is probably going to be difficult/awkward, if 12 months + then it is unreasonable to expect you to not take any leave at all.

Unless you're like my mate who hasn't had a day off in 5 years and has not been benched in that time either, in which case you're A) possibly slightly mad but also B) more minted than the Polo factory!

Each to their own. I only take time off in contract for the bank holidays and christmas to new year. Any other holidays I take between contracts.

I personally dont see the point taking time off during a contract and losing money when you dont get paid between contracts. I know one contractor friend who will literally work anywhere and on anything so long as they arent out of work. His choice or commitments I guess.

That said, Im selective about which contracts I want to work on so dont have this obssession that I must got straight from one contract to another.

What is with the sudden raft of newbies that can't make a decision for themselves based on their own lifestyle choices and own situation recently?

There is no consensus. You are an individual that is capable of thinking for themselves based on their own situation.

Holidays always while on the bench for me. WBBS, it makes no sense to have a holiday during a contract and lose income for your company. A couple of weeks off would lose you thousands (and that's before you've even paid for the holiday).

I tend to take little time off during contract, e.g 4 weeks and a few odd days in 18 months.

Approaching contract end in 23 days, and to be honest quite looking forward to a couple of weeks off. Hopefully not a few months.

You never know though, could turn out a blinder if next week's interview goes well, and switch straight over.

I work with the intention of working 9 months a year and spending 3 months abroad (Western oz for 3 months when this contract finished). During my contracts i go for the odd long weekend but have never taken more then 2 consecutive days off.

Just because I've not been on this board since 2009 does not mean I am new to contacting. It was a question to gather the views of others, not because I lack the ability to make my own decision. No need to get your knickers in a knot over a simple question.
