You are correct but I would point out that it would be pretty stupid to just turn up with only a verbal nod. You are correct there is an implied contract if they ask to you carry on working without a signed contract but a verbal one is a minefield. If someone denies saying it or isn't in a position to give that authorisation you could be in hot water as you won't be insured or covered by clients policies etc. Only needs someone to say no and your chance of getting paid goes out of the window as well.
