Could it be because of Olympics

The market most definitely looks dire (the worst in last two years). Could this be because of the Olympics, companies are not taking on any new projects? If so it could improve after the event?

I think this is the delayed effect of the recession, takes time to filter through to the IT sector. IT projects don't get stopped straight away, the projects get completed, but no new budgets get approved.

Maybe 6 months.

Maybe indefinitely.

I don't work in .Net, but in the IB I've been working in for the last 2 years I'd say 80-90% of the .Net stuff has been pushed out to India. Whether that work will ever come back is anyone's guess. Market is flooded with people, many prepared to work at very low rates, so unless you have additional skills on top of .Net, it might be a struggle. My IB client will only take on cheap permies for .Net roles.

I've contracted 23 years, and it's got very bad in the last 10 years - worse and worse each year, in fact. And with the state of the world economy, maybe the "good old days" are gone for good. Worth thinking about, even if you disagree with that sentiment.

Well I think things have been improving since the beginning of the year, so it should improve in a few months.

There are still contracts, it's just harder, and I suspect that after the budgets have been approved in April there should be a seasonal improvement.

Market if fine for good developers with real experience and skills, I see a lot front end devs (MVC ASP>NET, Javascript etc), that market is saturated with bobs and wannabes.

Been hearing that every since the dot com bubble, I find it's usually incompetent contractors who say it. Never had a problem getting a role.

Well, my "incompetence" has kept me in contracts since 1989.

I have 12 years excellent experience - C#, ASP.Net, SQL server, VBA, HTML, CSS, jQuery, MVC, etc.

I have interviewed at number of major players in the city and CW, and have been offered jobs, but the contracts never came through.

Yes read that again - I PASSED the interviews, was offered the jobs, accepted, did the starter paperwork but NO contract turned up in each case.

Wtf do you have to do to get a job. It is absolutely crazy out there.

That's always been part of contracting, just because they offer a contract doesn't mean they've got the budget signed off for it
