Quick one reference to commuting

Having looked at several postings on the internet I have figured that there is not much work in my geographical area. With regard to commuting to areas far away what do you people tend to do?
Cheap hotel?
Drive in everyday?
Get the train down?
Say the contract is a three month gig would you be better renting a place in the locality of the job?

Any advice appreciated.

90 mins (one way) commute is my own max but only on train (power nap outbound) as better than hotel etc. Currently do this on current contract as helps to be as flexible as possible when contracting re: location. A few years ago did 90 min (one way) drive and nearly killed myself on the motorway due to exhaustion by the Friday and flogged the car to death and had to replace.

Last gig I got, I rented a room via mondaytofriday.

Walking distance to client gig, nice flat, and significantly cheaper than a hotel. I also paid the cleaner £20 a month to iron my shirts for me - just hung them on the back of the door on a Tuesday morning, and they were nicely done when I cam back that night.

Have done B&B and cheap hotel before as well. I've also rented a flat (first gig) for 6 months.

Thanks for the info re:spareroom and mondaytofriday. Currently looking at a new 3 month contract that isn't commutable but grown tired of B&Bs/Hotels so could be the answer.

There is no 'tend' to do. Every situation is different and depends heavily on the persons situation. Do they have family/kids/own house/attitude to working away/Duration of contract/need for cash

You can't ask such a generic question and hope to get a meaningful answer.

You need to think about your own situation, where you are prepared to work, what you are prepared to do and then look at your options.

The points above are fair, you need to assess what you want from things and what's tolerable to you. For example, my current contract is about 2:15-2:30 hours each way door-to-door and that's perfectly fine for me as I like getting home to my own bed and wife, I make decent use out of the train journey in catching up with my reading, TV shows, etc. Others get grumpy at anything over 1hr each way. I also mitigate it by getting first class train tickets to make sure I get a seat each way!

Last stay-away for me was drive up Monday, home Friday afternoon and stay in a Travelodge at their cheapest rates booked in advance. Easier on commuting but then it's essentially work from Monday morning to Friday evening as staying in a hotel/B&B/whatever just is nowhere near as good as home for me.

Some nice hotels may offer a discount if you do a block booking.

When I was in Edinburgh, I found a serviced apartment through LastMinute and booked for the week. When I was there, I asked if they could do me a decent rate, and they came back with something higher than LastMinute did. I told them it was pricier that way, and they slashed it.

I ended up in a brand new serviced apartment with kitchen, two rooms, sea views, TV, freeview, free wifi, free parking and a shuttle bus into town all day for less than the Premier Inn was charging down the road.
