Just checked mine for my ensuing contract - 37 hours, 7.4 hours a day. That's three days work here in current permierole. Bonus!!

I have quoted the client £350 per day based on a 35 hr week, they did say it was a 40 hr week which I though mean't 35 hrs work and 5hrs lunch. Which now means I need to renegotiate the rate to £400 per day instead or reduce the hours to 35.

Anyone else signed a contract requesting above 35 hrs? new to me

Did 9 months of 9-6 (expected to work overtime for free as well!) with a company in Crewe. I don't want to name them but they are known for being one of the worst places to work in the UK. 30 mins lunch is the norm but I found the culture to be to have a 15 min break and then back to work. A lot of people worked 45 hours during the week, I refused to work more than 42.5 which was in the contract. At least I learnt my lesson....

Oh and that was all done for £250/day. Still it got me into contracting and I am happy to have done it, means I can always say that I have worked somewhere worse.

You just needed to know how to deal with them. At the same place I lasted 18 months while often arriving late and leaving early. The rate increased everytime I even vaguely talked about leaving.

To be honest with you, working 5 hours a day at that place would kill me for 18 months let alone anywhere near 8 hours a day.

The trick is not to be seen as a member of staff. I made sure I was the person management came to, by solving certain immediate issues their members of staff couldn't do.

The fact that those solutions usually involved a variation of six lines of sql was neither here nor there.

Once that was done provided I was around at the busy points no one commented on my late arrivals, earlier departures and overly long lunch breaks.

Yep, I have worked at one of those 'Crewe' places - it was brutal. Took me 8 months to get a contract and bail. Needed the job title to take next step but not sure I would do the same again.
Now doing a steady 9-4, 20 mins from home with footy at lunchtimes (its like center parcs with offices). Despite making it clear I have 50% spare capacity, they have no concerns and have unbelievably just mentioned a possible extension...

9-4:30 here but quite a way from home. Luckily got authorisation for working from home 1-2 days a week. To be honest anything beats that place in Crewe.

Did a gig at a big financial a couple of years back, and was working through 2 agencies (both taking their cut, I might add, but first contract after a while off for me). First agency said 37 hour week, and x amount per day. After being there 2 months, the second agency said "We're invoicing them based on 40 hours per week - would you mind doing the extra hours" - FFS! I just cut my 'leisurely' 45 minute lunch down to a 15 minute one and still came and went at the same times...

My current client has a 35 hour standard week. When I was at LTSB, they did stipulate 40 excluding lunch. The norm appears to be 37.5 to 40 depending on the client.

TBH, I dont see how any contractor can work 35 hour week for 11 years on different contracts unless they were taking the piss or, possibly working in London.

Still, the OP reckoned the 40 hour week include 5 one hours lunches, presumably paid for by the client. What a plonker.
I couldn't give two fornicators! Yes, really!
