Hi ,

Just need some advice, i had an interview for a new contract role based within te nhs last week on friday, it was a 6 week contract i traveled 200 miles for this interview did well the company were asking me when can i start and that they would let the agency know on monday if they would select me , come monday no reply agencys says they cant get hold of them same thing on tuesday then wednesday i get a call and the agency says that the company doesnt wish to recruit any more!!!

how strange is this?

has this happened to anyone else?

would i be a good idea for me to ring the company direct and get feedback?

please if anyone else has been through this or can offer good advice let me know

Don't waste your time and move on.

Unfortunately some managers in some companies waste both agencies and contractors time by saying they want to recruit someone when the actual budget hasn't been signed off yet, and never will be because there is no money.

Least in this case the agency bothered to ring you back to inform you the company wasn't hiring.

Not at all uncommon. Jobs get canned for all number of reasons, there's no conspiracy or anything - tulip happens. Contractors tend to grow a thick skin about this over time (generally after getting a few good months of invoicing done!). Certainty is a permie thing whereas contractors are a flexible, highly skilled workforce that can be hired and fired at will and that's what clients are willing to pay a premium for.

Not to say that it's not disappointing or annoying when you've invested time and money doing a pitch for a job but that's the way contracting works, think of yourself as a sales person and the product you are selling is yourself. Does a salesperson make a sale for every pitch they make? Pick yourself up, move on and look for the next one and try and spot the timewasters (not always easy, I know).

Th you guys , Well i suppose you are right , I am quite new to contracting have a bout 2 years experince ( carried out 4 information analyst contracts within the NHS).

This really got to me becuase the market is very slow and ive been looking for 2 months ( this is the longest gap i have evr had)

In the last month we have had at least two stories of the client pulling the role with the OP in reception so as understandably annoying your situation is it is pretty common and by far not the worst case. Whether you can cut it as a contractor is partly down to whether you can manage these situations, shrug them off and keep plugging away until you get one. It doesn't matter how many years you have been contracting or how experienced or best fit for the role you are this will happen. Embrace it as part of the lifestyle and move on.

Welcome to contracting, as everyone else says it happens day in day out, think yourself lucky you did not drive there on monday morning and get canned in the reception.

I would not waste my time calling the client, take it on the chin and move on

No i went on friday morning on train , went in had the inetrview , the buys even asked me how soon can you start, i said the the following week!!
