Apart from a short stint in Sheffield, all my work's been in the South, miles from home (Leics). As I would rather stick pins in my eyes than move any further South (and I also can't afford it) and I want to be close to home so I can read our two year a bedtime story more than twice a week does anyone have any top tips for getting a contract close to home? I realise my skills (guess from the handle) are a bit niche and I'm happy to branch out of course. It would be great if anyone's done something similar and can offer some help.

My home town is Manchester. Worked there for 6 months in the last 22 years of contracting. Have a flick through the recent post someone started "Why are there no contracts in Manchester." Guess your neck of the woods is the same.
It's called life.

"Does anyone have any top tips for getting a contract close to home?"
Trying to offer some useful advice other than Jobserve filtering etc. I guess you could do some pounding of your local streets into some local agencies who may represent local businesses that wouldn't necessarily advertise on Jobserve for short term staff? I know in my town there are about 4 or 5 agencies that advertise contracts in their windows, but that don't use any of the big internet job search engines.

Well, I think he's told you utter bollocks yet again. No change there, then.Originally posted by Peoplesoft bloke View PostOk - fair point, well made.
There's no need to go 'permie' to get jobs closer to home. Apart from the first 4 years of contracting, all my roles have been within daily travel. That nearly 10 years.
First thing I'd do is contact the agents you have good rapport with (you do have some, dont you?) and tell them you're looking for job within daily travel ie upto 2 hours each way. Then update the cv with the same info.
When looking for roles on job sites, dont apply for jobs which are outside the distance you want to travel. Yo may have to adjust your rate expectations a little (and not a massive amount) because you want to stay within daily travel.
IME agents contact you about jobs 'away from home' because your cv gives the impression you'll work in the locations rates are generally higher.
Dont believe people who say there are no jobs in Manchester or on their doorstep etc. There are. Its a question of searching and not demanding london rates in other locations.I couldn't give two fornicators! Yes, really!

There might be jobs in Manchester, it is the UK's 3rd largest city... Leicester is only the 10th largest so you are going to suffer with that for a start. If you have been scanning the job sites and you can't get a job locally there are two reasons....
You are not looking hard enough or there aren't any. You should be able to gauge how many there are by searching job sites. What is the actual problem? you can't see any on jobserve or your skills don't match what is there?
In smaller areas I expect it is a bit of a closed shop with limited supply and demand.'CUK forum personality of 2011 - Winner - Yes really!!!!

Ah, in a thread of sensible replies from sensible people, one of our regular idiots had to chip in. With more of his usual "bollocks".Originally posted by BolshieBastard View PostWell, I think he's told you utter bollocks yet again. No change there, then.
Still, thanks for the reminder BB. How on earth I missed you off my "ignore" list this weekend I'll never know... Still, welcome as a new member. Please feel to post as many replies as you like from now on; I don't have to see them. Happy days.

Apart from googling your local area looking for your skills and cold emailing local companies the crop up.
Also use linkedin to find the companies and see if there have been anyone leave, then make a call to see if they are looking to recruit ?Comment
