    travel to Portsmouth/Southampton area

    Hello,
Not sure if this is the right part of the forum to post.Anyway...

Is anyone out there travelling or has travelled recently from Wilmslow/South Manchester area to the Portsmouth/Southampton Area for regular work? - Normally, it's just a bit too far (and costly) for me to consider, but things are different nowadays.....

Looking at it, flying seems to be an option or using the train to London etc, and normally I wouldn't consider driving because of the grief. Anyway, I'd be obliged for any thoughts/tips etc.

    Thanks

flybe fly from manchester to southampton only takes an hour and the prices are reasonable. Downside is that you still need to travel at the other end.
Of course you could drive the first week and leave the car there whilst you fly back for the weekends.

Thanks, I had a look at the Flybe website, it's about £280 - £290 (at the moment) for return to Mcr. I'd probably use the train to get to the clients from the airport, although it'd mean a bit of walking etc. Like you say, I could get the car down there the first week and leave it there. The overall expenses will start to add-up though, ah well.

I was looking at flights in September, with that being off peak plus advance booking it drops down to £100 or so.

If you're given a 3 month contract and you book all the flights you'll need in advance now, you'll could still be saving money even if they terminate the contract after only 2 months.

I agree with what you're saying about getting cheaper flights, but most of the time I have to book flights shortish notice and peak times, particularly as I don't know what the client is really like until I get there... example I always try to base myself at home on Friday - I've had some gigs in the past where there is not the choice or they are T**ts. If the client was reasonable then I'd go for advance tkts as you mentioned.

          Thanks though

If you are in Wilmslow why not just get your driver to take you down? He can use the spare Bently so as to save wear and tear on the main motor as well.

That's true! Why I didn't think of that?

Only thing is they're both in Abersoch at the moment or is it Malaga...

4 hours on the train from Stockport, some of the trains are even direct. Off peak train for £84.40 return ticket (6 AM Monday morning and 3 PM Friday afternoon).

If not, there is a very reliable route down there on the M6/M40 and A34 taking 4 hours a good day and 24 hours a bad......

I didn't know there was a direct train from Stockport, thought'd they dropped a lot of the south coast ones a while back. The full price for the peak service is astronomical, something like £300 +, used to be a fraction of that not long ago.
I would have though 06.00 hrs is peak though, normally??

I agree - The car and road option is the least favourite

                  Thanks though

So would I, but not according to the website.... trainline: buy cheap train tickets, get UK train times & fares - book seats online

I had a contract down in Oxfordshire and thought the trains would be an option (same line), but they were just overpriced and ran on the wrong times with awkward changes.
