I have tried and failed in the past. Used to be very sniffy over who they took on, IMO. Maybe they're not so popular these days and can't be so choosy. They have a couple of jobs open on projects at the moment if you're in O&G engineering. I'm working for another oil major presently, near London.

I contracted at BP HQ in Ldn about five yrs or so ago. It was one of the best gigs I've had. Tried quite a few times in the past but can't get back in there now, even though I've got good refs.
Looks like they're still a bit sniffy who they take on. A mate of mine with very good credentials and experience but hasn't been to Oxbridge/Imperial/Durham University etc... got a "Dear John" off them today via an agent. Shell are the same too, in my experience.

I was in for a shout on a contract in Feb. Seemed to drag on for ages and then dropped off the radar. Annoying as I was perfect and it was great day rates.
I did several years ago managing the hardware deployment on behalf of IBM, great site, nice people, easy to get to, one of the better sites I ran (and there were lots!).

I've worked for BP and Shell. I'm not sure how I ended up at either maybe it was that I worked on diving drilling projects for both and a comms project for BP during my uni vacations.
I enjoyed BP but I didn't like having my own office at Shell or their offices not being on my bus route.
There are loads of graduates from red brick and non-ancient universities at BP and Shell.
Most O&G roles I see though ask for 5, usually 10 years O&G experience
