Choices, choices...

I've read numerous generic threads about which path to choose in the Uber complicated world of contracting - So, I'm going to make this one a little more concise and centered all around me and my skills.......

About me:

Early 30's. 11 years military (RAF). Holder of SC/CTC clear.
ITIL foundation, 4 x ITIL Practitioner q's. ITIL Red Badge (yes, the military are quite good for courses...!)
PRINCE2 Pract.

Originally wanted to go into Service management, but found myself accepting a 6 'monther' as a tester on a bespoke MoD system.

There's now talk of extension should I

a) take extension + poss slight increase in daily + security
b) Make the transition into service management - How?

I wouldn't walk away from revenue in this market unless it was totally unbearable. Lots of different flavours of Service Management, some more suited to perm roles. Easy answer is apply for roles you like the look of, sound available and see what response you get. Competition may still be fairly brutal currently but you should still be able to judge your current marketability in that area. I would seriously consider a perm role to get a foothold.

2 points, if I may.

1. There's no such thing as security in contracting.
2. Unless you have a better offer from somewhere else (or require/want to take time off), I would take the extension.

Aha! So thats how you get it. Where do I sign up. Will I get sent to Afghanistan or Iraq?

Doesn't that kinda make it impossible for us to make a decision on your future. Only you know your situation, what you are willing to do and what you can put up. Pointless asking us if someone says move to Edinburgh to take a role for £100 a day to get exp really.

I would also say take extention and save like crazy. Getting in to Service with so many qaulifications and no exp is going to be a nightmare. So many with no backup may even be a hinderance to old school SD guys.

I would say you are going to have to take a raft of pretty lowly roles and build that in to a service role and start from the bottom or go permie for a year or two IMO. You can't, ok,will be very very lucky to get a contractor job with no experience behind you.

Take the extension, in my experience as ex mob, your mob experience is a little suspect to most civvie companies. Build up some good civvie experience and been given extensions shows to prospective clients that you can cut the mustard so to speak.

Most of my contracts have come from word of mouth and repeat clients but I've tended to stay in aerospace and defence where there are a few ex mob people around.

Another tip, on your CV make each posting look like a different job rather than lumping it all together.
