    Help - CTC clearence rejected

    Hi there,

I'm hoping someone here can help as you all seem to know a lot about security clearence. I recently applied for a job with the Home Office and I was offered the job subject to CTC clearence. Well I've just found out that I have been refused and therefore cannot take the job.

I have been refused on residency grounds. Basically I spent June 2007 - Dec 2008 working for a charity in SE Asia, as such I have not been in the UK for the full 3 years previous to my application (March 2009). I'm more than a little upset as I feel this is a bit ridiculous as I am a UK resident, I was born in the UK and have lived here all my life. I never gave up my UK residency at some point, I simply lived abroad temporarily for 18 months. I don't see why they can't look back past the last 3 years and see I have a totally clear police record for my whole life before then and since I got back. I'm losing out on a job not because I've done something, but because I can't prove I haven't!

I plan to appeal. It has been suggested to me that a reference from the director of the charity in Asia may help. Researching i've found everywhere it says that for CTC clearence you must have "NORMALLY been resident in the UK for AT LEAST 3 years." So that reads to me that 1) normally indicates exceptions can be made and 2) it doesn't say that it needs to have been the LAST three years necessarily, they have security records for almost my entire life aside from those 18 months.

If anyone knows anything about this and can help me with my appeal I'd be hugely grateful as the recruitment process has taken over 6 months and now to lose my job at this point is devestating......

    Thanks in advance

Yep it is ridiculous, just like it is ridiculous that UK residents that have been born and lived here all their lives go to Afghanistan/Pakistan etc for 18 months then come back to the UK. I mean..... they are all worth of jobs in high secret and sensitive places.

Are you a contractor or a perm?? Will you have not been prepared for this as you will have been aware of it when you filled the form in? If you are a contractor losing the gig goes with the turf sometimes?

If the will hang about while you appeal then go for it. If it is a contract I can't see they will. Could be a matter of chalking it up as a experience and move on...

Oddly enough this situation is one in the eye for us as we are in a situation where those without security cannot get a job without it in case we fail. People fail so they go back to taking already cleared people. Bugger
    Next........

The exceptions are likely to be those who have worked aboard for in a government/Nato/UN position or in the EEA.

It's a perm job which is why I'm so miffed and appealing. I was aware it may be a problem but seeing how I declared my time abroad right from the application form and it was discussed at length in the interview, I thought they wouldn't have offered me the job if they thought the time abroad would cause me a problem (it's a waste of their time and money too). My would be line manager seems surprised I've been rejected too.

The thing is that I know someone who went off travelling for 18 months then walked right back and was cleared for a job in the PM's office...........so I don't know why he was cleared and I wasn't

It's likely to be a combination of the country you were in, the fact that you were working there not travelling and who you were working for.

I know someone who got cleared to DV level after they had gone travelling for over a year. They hadn't worked at all while travelling.

Oh well. Rules are rules. Personally I wouldn't have told them about the SE Asia thing.

Yeah - lying on a security clearance application is always a good idea

Especially for a permie job, because you're never going to accidentally mention "oh, when I was in Vietnam..." over the course of your career, are you?
If you have to add a , it isn't funny. HTH. LOL.

LOL. Thats a great idea. Last time I heard lying on official documents could be classed as fraud or worse. Thanks for your valuable input.

Out of curiosity, which charity was it that you worked for?
