    First experience of blatant fishing...

No idea who she said she worked for, but had a call about a job local to me. They don't come up often so I was obviously interested. They wanted my skills and when I stated what rate I wanted she told me that was no problem as that was the least they were offering. I asked, but she can't tell me the client's name, they asked for it to be confidential until interview. I ask how I'm supposed to know what to say if someone else calls me about the same role - she says it's a bank/financial in the centre of Leicester. I'm then trying to work out who that be, cos the only major player I can think of in this industry is not in the centre and I've worked for them before. So it's suddenly a bit fishy and too good to be true, but I'm still biting...

That is, until she says "by the way, can we have a technical reference from your previous client"?

I say sure, when I get an interview, I will pass on details to the client.

She says sorry, we can't put you forward for the role without one.

I said fine, don't put me forward then.

    I hope I was right.

No client name, rate 'no problem' but a request for a reference? You did the right thing missus.
Next time you get one of these calls try gving the name of the previous agent - and report the reaction back here .

Yeah, I was thinking I should have said that but at the time I was annoyed at having been played and forgot about it. I don't think any of my last few clients officially give references for contractors anyway, so it would have had to be the Agent. Although that wouldn't be classed as a Technical Reference.
I know a couple of people I was working with at latest contract would have done one for me if I'd asked so I was thinking about them and forgetting the whole Agents do references thing. I'll remember next time, you can bet on it!

Just glad I realised and didn't give in.
