    Verbal offer reneged on

De-lurking for this, thought I'd share the pain!

After passing first and second interviews I was verbally offered a role at <sp: edited> internet gambling company. They wanted me to start in 2 weeks. Then, with 4 days to go, they figured out that they didn't actually have money in the budget. It's not just me either - several other contractors have been shafted too.

I would highly recommend RUNNING AWAY from any roles which meet this description, as the company are clearly a total nightmare.

Oh well. I hear the bench is comfortable?

Either admin or you has edited the name of the company!

Is the company you previously mentioned basically second to Mr.Starry poker? Eg: a bit tilty?

I would be interested to hear your story. Mainly because nobody is usually directly employed by these tax-dodging poker companies... instead consulting companies spun off from the main poker company then hire people to offer their services in a consulting fashion to the main poker place.

I have a direct experience of a close and trusted friend in one of the offices of these consulting services. I myself have also been inside. If you want any information, post here or PM me. For the benefit of the group, and given you are anonymous, better to post here; depends how paranoid you are these days.

It happens. Happened to me on 2 or 3 occasions. I know other contractors who've had it happen the same to them.

Its part and parcel of contracting.
I couldn't give two fornicators! Yes, really!

& it's even more part and parcel of working with companies in the gaming industry. They will bluff you or face you down and it's all part of the game to them.

The gambling industry is speculative at the best of times.

A verbal agreement is worth slightly less than a written agreement.

Remember, if someone offers you a contract, its for their benefit not yours!

Lesson learnt I guess. Kicking myself for wasting the past couple of weeks though, haven't applied for anything else since I got the offer. I'll keep looking until I've got it in writing in future.

As Mr Goldwyn Mayor the movie mogul once said, a verbal agreement isn't worth the paper it's printed on...

Would be good to know the company to help others avoid or be extra careful in 'dealing' with them. It would help to lower the 'risk'.

I heard B**fair were recruiting recently, so I will 'speculate' that it might be them.

COntracting is a bit of a 'gamble' I'm afraid.

In the current market especially I would advise always keeping your options open until the contract is signed and your bum is on the chair
