I was forced to go contracting over a year ago (was also bored of 'permie' work). The OP clearly wants to make the switch and just needs advice in the right direction - forget the money - just make sure your getting more than you could earn in the permie world. I also wouldn't just walk out of an existing role - work your notice, they may send you on your way anyway, it's a small world out there...

            It's not.

            Half the membership are accountants.

Oh, I’m sorry….I seem to be lost. I was looking for the sane side of town. I’d ask you for directions, but I have a feeling you’ve never been there and I’d be wasting my time.

                  My 2 cents

I have been a contractor now for the most of my life, only ever had a 4 year stint as an employee in Permie land. I don't do contracting for the money, in reality you probably only get a couple of grand a year more than a good permie wage. I do contracting for the lifestyle choice.

Are you prepared to look for work on average every 3-6 months?
Are you willing to attend on average 6-8 interviews a year?
Are you able thrive under pressure?
                  Are you self reliant?
Do you have a business mind?
Are you able to keep abreast of your industry?

If you're doing contracting only for the money, I would think again.
That Daily rate my look like 3-5 times more than your getting in permie land, but it doesn't work out that way in reality.

New to the forum and after reading this thread it got me wondering as to why everyone on here contracts? Is it the freedom? The money? (although be judging by the comments on here it looks like its not as good as I would have perceived from a permy view) or something else?
Current "view" is mainly to due market conditions, compared to two years ago things are pretty dire, even for the people in contract there is a lot of uncertainty, mainly along the lines of "when this contract ends where is next one coming from?"

A lot of stress for many people to be constantly under, especially those with familys/obligations who did not prepare properly for the bad times

Sure we get freedom, but we lose all the security permiedom gives to obtain that freedom

Sure we get more money, but there is no sick, holiday pay and when we are no longer needed there is no redundancy payments, golden parachutes so forth

In a good market contracting can be and is very rewarding and because of this you see tons of permies joining the ranks due to the greener looking grass, but in a bad market the weak are brutally culled from the strong, the "permie contractors" go back to permiedom and only the "contractors for life" remain

                    Untill the cycle starts again

i havent read the 11 pages of updates but honestly would phone in sick for 2 weeks if you hate it or you **** up you can just go back to being a permie, if you then want to quit ur permie role, then who cares just quit it and say you cant come into work make out ur uncles gone missing in Nigeria or something or just give them ur notice and stayon sick leave, even if your permie role have been good tooo you loyality doesnt mean a thing in this day and age. thays my personal opinion.

obviously my opinion is a bit outragous but if you contract role can make you earn loads more then damn .. its about the $$$
