I used to think the likes of Mal and FaQ were a tad harsh on the newbies and a little haughty.

After reading this whole thread - I no longer have this opinion.

I'm a moderator of another forum. At first, we were nice to newbies when they broke the rules, which gentle reminders etc.. Now we find it much more effective to reject any posts they make which break the rules. This sends an automatic email to their registered email address with a rather curt message telling them to read the rules. We may add a note explaining the nature of the infraction.

We find we have far fewer repeat offenders than in the days of niceness.

Finally made the long awaited switch to contracting!

Found a good first contract and I know things could be tougher in future but I thought what the heck lets try one which is close by to start of with!
