Would it have been a good idea to subsidise the following that don't really exist in the UK any more
    • Ship building industry
    • Coal mining industry
    • Cloth weaving industry
    • Tin mining industry

The answer is no. It is easier to say that when it applies to someone else, but some people are going to have to face the fact that they are in the same boat now as the coal miners were in the 1980s.

That isn't a nice thought, but a dose of reality is required.
Your grasp of economics is truly something to behold. Have you considered applying for a job in the Treasury ?

Its quite ironic that the one sector we all work in (IT) provides the tools and ability for these jobs to be offshored!

Still, roll on the general election.
Not that it will change much but I really want to see Labour in a position where they can't even form an official shadow cabinet

Some unemployed Brits will learn something else.

Younger Brits will work out how to avoid being unemployed when they finish their education.

Brits that are stuck in their ways will be forced into a lower standard of living.

My point is that it is bad for the economy overall if jobs are outsourced for short term gain, as the spending power of that cash is lost from the economy. No one here can compete with counties where the average wage is $200 a month or less. The only way this can pan out is if the whole world equalises its pay structure, by that time we will have no skills left.

Imagine you are building a chemical plant. You can either build a cheap one that belches out carcinogens that will eventually seriously harm the local residents, or you can build a good one with efficient filters. The good one costs a lot more but your competitors are all building cheap ones. No-one is complaining that much about them and after all, it is a competitive market. Which would you choose?
BTW - assume the government are not really enforcing the pollution laws.

Used to believe that to, but these days not so sure.

So much industry and thus jobs have gone over sea's that I think we are starting to (or already have) go past the tipping point where lower costs to business is no longer a clear cut case of "good for the economy". We are heading back towards higher unemployment permantly and those who are employed are in an ever decreasing number of sectors (mainly services these days), thus more vulnerable to economic turmoil

Because at the end of day what good are lower costs if no one can afford them because no one has a job?

I've already got a Jeraboam of Bollinger reserved for June 10th; I really hope they fall a long, long way. Particularly the likes of Harman, Balls and Brown. I can't wait.

If an UK giant is not able to make profit in UK employing local workforce, then employer looks to lower cost thereby increase profit. This allows them to stay afloat.....instead of depending on govt for bailout or collapse all to gether....

Company making profits = New Jobs Created + Existing Jobs Saved...

Hence Outsourcing = Benefits to the economy in the long run...

Not to mention lots of Indian jobs are being outsourced to UK and US...example ...lots of architecture design are outsourced to uk companys and oil mining research...etc etc

Indeed. And quite amazing that IT not only gets no government help : but is actively sneered at.

Is God willing to prevent evil, but not able? Then he is not omnipotent. Is he able, but not willing? Then he is malevolent. Is he both able and willing? Then whence cometh evil? Is he neither able nor willing? Then why call him God? - Epicurus

This doesn't apply to CUKers like us.

IT contractors by defintion are skilled professionals, better educated (over qualified in some cases), adaptable and play critical part in any IT project for its success and delivery.

We let go the labour in these industries not the expertise in Design and Engineering.

The issue is - this govt is allowing out business/wealth creation of UK multinationals at the expense of skilled citizens and allowing in foreign job seekers under ICT/HSMP/WP.

I have a Master's degree, 10 years of quality work that my clients were/are happy to pay for and I'm not certainly stuck in my ways. I'm not an 80's unskilled coal miner and outsourcing should not be the reason for me to accept a low standard of living.
