This LinkedIn thingie - any good?

OK, I keep getting emails from agents offering me a join to their "linkedIn" thingie. Having never used the system - and being none the wiser having just visited the LinkedIn website - I thought I'd ask you guys.

So, is LinkedIn any good for contractors? Or is it just something else I'd be wasting my time on, which I could be putting to much more productive use (i.e. Jobserve, reading books to update my skills, etc.)? Any things I should/shouldn't do in using the service (i.e. privacy concerns of my data, etc.)?

All replies gratefully accepted and appreciated.

Ps. And no, I didn't use "the forum search" option, before some smart-ass comes back with that response.

Didn't you use "the forum search" option?

Some on here say they have won contracts via LinkedIn.

      It can't hurt to network.

Not got anything out of it (then again only joined recently) but then again 30 mins to an hour will have you properly set up on it so if it is waste it will not be a huge one

Just make sure your contacts are not shared (there was a parameter somewhere ..) Then it is safe to add agents.

I've never started a thread asking "Is LinkedIn any good?" and I'm feeling a bit left out.

So this LinkedIn thing, is it any good?

              Cheers for the links.

Having read them, I think the answer to my question of "Is linkedin any good" would appear to be "no."

Oh well, I've registered now anyway. We'll see how it goes.

              Cheers,

                It's the way forward

Especially the groups, which often have jobs sections. If it gains traction, it'll help cut out the middle man.

linked in is completely overrun with recruitment agents, so only those people wishing to be contacted by us will post their details there.
Let us not forget EU open doors immigration benefits IT contractors more than anyone

Worth a shot. I'd wear a Mr Blobby suit if it would get me contacted by agents.....
