    State of the market

Out of interest, what is the state of the market at present? Is it really dire? Is it getting worse? Is it levelling out or even begining to get better?

When people are thinking of going permie it sounds as if things are getting worse. I can only assume someone would consider permie if they were seeing lots of people losing IT jobs all around them?

It does feel pretty bad. Im applying for roles daily but come back at afrom agents. I think that you just gotta be prepaired to have a while on the bench. It will pick up again, it always does. Im going to do a few Microsoft exams etc in the mean time to keep my skills up to scratch.

I am being fussy tho since Im only looking on Central London and the home counties but there has always been more than enough work.....for all of us.

Same thing happened to me. Was within a whisker of going permie, hesitated, and then almost immediately landed a blue chip gig at a very respectable rate.

I've been pondering over this and I think there's an element of group-mind going on.

It's a bit like that situation where a load of drivers all switch to another lane in a traffic jam at the same time thus making a faster moving lane into the slowest.

Or you get up from your desk to go to the loo at the exact same moment that 10 other guys decide to do exactly the same thing...very disconcerting.

Similarly a bunch of benched contractors all decide to go permie at roughly the same time so there is a sudden decrease in contractor supply and seemingly the market picks up (but doesn't really).

I'm thinking of calling it the Law Of Nambulism.

Hehe yeah. Either way, I think we just sit tight and wait.
Being permie sucks and going back to it would just be silly......

the thought of going permie again makes me queasy.

Talk of possible extension past current end of date of January yesterday, so fingers crossed for that.

Don't do permie, I did back in Jan and I'm pretty much at the point of jacking it in - as soon as a gig comes up I'm off, s0d the notice period.

9 months of IPC (individual personal contract) & management capability grids, meeting after meeting to discuss how we can all be better engaged with each other (group hug), the usual corporate training courses supposedly designed to further your career but are actually carp (2 days of presenting with impact - communication can have positive or negative messages, go figure!!), being sent off to paint a charity shop or build a fence, team events with people you'd rather not associate with - the list is endless.

Then you take them up on the offer of training to further your career (as they continually say how committed they are to helping you further your career) to be told it's not directly related to exactly what you're doing so tough luck, then get grief for not doing your real job (like when is there time with all the fluff you keep getting us to do).

If it takes you 6 months on the bench to get your next role you're still better off than permie. Plus you've had a nice long break. Something to dream about at your next permie company motivational meeting!
Funny, when it's mentioned contractors earn way more than permies they try to explain it only appears that way due to NI, IR35, etc. But apparently despite this they can work 6 months a year and still build up a ton of savings.

Another way to look at it is they need to be able to build up a rainy day fund because there will be rainy days. Stability versus risk. "You take a chance either way, I leave it to you [Mr Anderson]"
