Taking a Contract to Permi Role

    Hi,

Just asking at this stage but been sent details of a 3 month contract role which is taken on the offering of a permi role later down the line. Just wonders what happens if you decide, na, don't fancy permi stuff yet, when you've taken the contract and completed the 3 months? I wouldn't want to take the contract knowing that it was unlikely I'd want to go permi although I wouldn't want to turn a 3 month gig down....

Same happened to me in last role. Was contract to perm. Initially 3 months. They extended for 3 months, then 2 months, then 3 months – and I left in the middle of that. Point being, they may say contract to perm, but it may end up being contract. Remember that you are only signing a 3 month contract, after that if you don’t want the perm role, just turn it down….

if you are benched then take the gig while you look for something else.
just don't tell them that you have no intentions of going permanent.
In the current climate you may end up changing your mind in 3 months anyway.
and its 3 months money in the war chest in the meantime

IMHO if the client gets to choose 3 months down the line whether they want you as a permie or not, you get the same choice.

make sure they don't put anything in the initial contract that pressurises you to work for them on a perm basis - not that it would be enforceable anyway, also beware of clauses that may attempt to restrict you working for their competitors.

I had a 4 - 6 week contract end up being 10 months. Manager kept asking me to go perm and I said I didnt fancy it but it was easier just to keep me on until his budget got cut.

Take it, or give it to me!
