I'm in the telecoms sector and get these all the time, sometimes from Hays aswell!

When/if we talk rates, the prices quoted are around half of what the going rate is. We have had a huge influx of labour from India & Pakistan from these "Managed Service Providers" and rates have fell through the floor.

    Bad times!

They may not even be from Hays IT.

Is this some kind of cunning pimp trick that I've not yet got my head around? Has anybody else experienced the same thing?
Just a thought, but could it be the agent does not have your correct email address? Sometimes the most complex problems actually have a simple answer.

Sadly not, I've had these kind of discussions many times, usually started by the agent saying they have my CV which has my email address and I confirm the address as a matter of course. I've had hundreds of calls like this over the years where the spec never appears.

I suspect it's agents fishing for info and then using the "I'll send you the spec" line as an end when they realise they can't get leads.

Your line of work is filled with shysters and no matter how much you protest every experienced contractor is aware that 99.99% of agents are full of it.

If there was some way I could erase all prior experiences with pimps from memory, I might consider your suggestion as a valid one.

                  Yep,

I get this regular. I normally spout bulltulip back. Usually they are trying to find a ball park figure to spout back to a potential customer about rates etc.
I get alot of these calls regarding "European" Work. The email never arrives, I never hear from them again.

If you do get an email with the job spec attached as a word document, have a look at the properties. It often has interesting information like - the name of the client...

It will be right beside the phone number the agent used to make the call you twonk.
