I'm working in Riyadh at the moment, well, in the hotel coffee shop watching the cup final. I've only been here 2 weeks and can honestly say it's not at all bad. I was expecting a descent into a mediaeval hell. Absolutely no issues whatsoever. Africa was much nore problematic than Saudi.

I've kept my passport, paid in GBP, use the management company recommended by the agency, who are based in the former Yugoslavia, with an office in Cyprus.

Can you hear me mssrs Brown and Darling? You got no chance of tax from me. Non whatsoever. Don't be fooled by the name, I'm a Brummie.

I've a 60 day multi entrance visa, the only proviso being I exit Saudi every 30 days. The company pay for a return flight to Dubai every month: I pay for the hotel. I see that as a perk .

The hotel and food is paid for by the company, and I have a driver. My ONLY expense is a quid a day for a pack of Marlboro'.

It is hot, but 90% of the time I'm in A\C. It's a dry heat anyway, so it's not a problem.

Booze is available, in the compounds. One of them's had a bar for 20 odd years, run by a Welshman I believe. I'm gonna save my thirst for Dubai....

The locals are very friendly, the streets are safe.

I haven't worked here before, so I wasn't known. I did a stint in Baghdad, that was my only advantage perhaps. I just replied to a Jobserve advert, 2 phone interviews, no references, whizz-bang I was here!

So far it's been totally without hassle, and can thoroughly recommend it...

Must get a bit lonely though. Can you take a bird or is it a case of DIY satisfaction. The local fluff must be well off-limits. I think they would cut your head off if you even try to look at whats under those burkas.

But I guess you'll have problems if you try to repatriate the cash, no? Well unless you're out of the country for a year and no long tax resident I guess.

Local fluff? Not sure I've seen any women, they're well hidden. I've seen Brian's mother a few times though. This aint a place to bring a woman to. Saudis rate women somewhere lower than dogs.

I'm paid directly into my personal a/c, repatriation of funds doesn't come into it.

As long as you're not UK resident during the whole financial year, and have told HMRC you've left, you're ok to bring those funds back to the UK later. If however your just working tempory out of the country, then hiding money off-shore and not declaring it, is tax evasion. If that is the case and you've done your homework ensuring your off-shore account is not linked to your UK address and you don't transfer any of the cash to the UK you'll get away with it. If not, later this year HRMC is requesting from 500 banks details of all off-shore accounts that have a UK address.

I work. I get paid. I dont pay tax to the UK.
