Darren, if this is a true tale, then you're a twat. Since when is a polite sms offensive? The Manager was trying to screw out the agency and probably acting without budget and other HR permissions. It was effectively a non-job and you missed out on nothing but wasted time and expectations. Stop crying like a baby and move on.

Certainly sounds like the client mgr was attempting to organise a direct contract - esp if rates were discussed - agencies typically don't like clients knowing what you are getting.

I can't believe you talked to the agency after agreeing a way forward with the client - unless you agreed with him in the f2f that you would do this.

I'd say it was an unfortunate misunderstanding, and worry more about getting another contract.

BTW Mgr did confirm me that he is going to issue contract through my agency only...I didn't tell Mgr my rate, but he knows my asking rate from my agency only..so nothing to hide there..

a) Ask you loads of questions
or
b) Outline what the job was.

If answer was a) Avoid this mgr without making it obvious.
From now on, negotiate contract details only through the agency and never talk to him any more than what is neccessary.
If he asks for your opinion, never give it - he is no friend of yours.

Also, if you get the gig, you should act as if this has never happened.
