A job in Singapore - what's it worth?

How do salaries stack up in Singapore? I know the cost of living is high out there, but taxes are proportionately lower as far as i'm aware.

So a very open question this might be, but if a permie job earns say £50k here, what would the equivalent be in Singapore?

Did a two week fixed price job there a few years ago for £5k. They kept back 1k withholding tax, but i got that offset by my accountant, so i came out square.

The heat was a bit oppressive and most of the shops are extremely agressive with the hard sell. The Chinese hate the Indians and vice versa and 'staring incidents' were the cause of a surge in violence amongst the youth.

Basically these Bruce Lee wannabes sit alone on street corners trying to make eye contact with passers by. If they do, its a challenge and a fight. I also met an awful lot of con men.

The locals (Chinese) that I was working with felt repressed by the authorities but they wouldnt talk about it, scared I guess.

Some of the people are pitifully poor. My chambermaid was in raptures when I let her keep a posh carrier bag that I was about to throw away. The hotel would have charged me a fortune for my washing, she did it for a few quid.

I also got chatted up by two gorgeous creatures on Orchid road who couldnt get enough of my broad shoulders, and western muscles. Then I noticed the adams apples.

Nice for a few weeks but I wouldnt live there.

I visited for a week and found it to be very different. I wasn't working through, so you have a different perspective.

I found it to be very safe and clean. I toured the entire place, and never had a problem.

Not the most exciting place in the world, but i'd definately be happy to work their for a short time.

I'm of indian decent, and didn't have any bruce lee types jumping out of the wood work with flying kicks, even in the dead of night.

Expensive? Maybe if you only dine in Raffles hotel and the like which are designed for expats

I lived there fairly recently for a few months. Food courts open all night, serving great food...seafood meal for the equivalent of a tenner...

Everyone speaks English, is polite, no hassles at all. Aircon is a godsend. Go for it!

Interestingly one of my favourite pimps has been on at me to take a SAP^H^H^H .net role in Singapore, flights and accommodation included.

Problem is I don't particularly like that quirky blue and white GUI interface. Is there an expert here who can tell me how to alter the colours?
