And how do you explain to the next agent/client what you have been doing for six months? Doesn't it look bad that you didn't work for that long?

I can accept not working for a number of months, war chest is good for a while, but I don't want to look 'crap' cos I didn't find a gig for months.

Been contracting almost 20 years, decided I may as well try something else, as the market is bleak. The last two gigs were with Banks and I just hate, hate, hate them, we are all geniuses compared to them!

I am going to work until the end of the year on my own software. I calculate realistically a couple of years before it pays for itself, from then on, freedom

Okay, I make it sound rosy but I honestly have got to the end of working for some of these idiots. There is more to life, and having spent most of the last couple of years away from my family, it will make a good change.

.... Good luck with the job searching... for your info, I decided that I was going to make the entire UK my job search, not just local.. if staying away from home 5 nights a week is the only solution, then so be it!

Are you not finding that because rates are so low, employers are only hiring locally - because they are worried about people walking as soon as the rates rise?

One interview I had a few weeks ago, the agent told me she was only putting forward people in my area for that reason. On the other hand I'm being put forward for roles far away from home so I guess it's possible.

Its also 3 weeks closer to April too. So he may only be benched for say, 4 to 6 weeks

Haven't had any of that and I'm pretty much applying UK and Europe wide.

I know it's difficult but people have to really quit the doom and gloom. It's bad enough trying to motivate yourself with all the tulipe in the papers and on the news.
It can't get any worse for me 8 months on the bench and OH about to receive his peanut sized redundancy.

Do you have any suggestions for technical volunteering.

I don't think collecting clothes for Oxfam is my scene.
