Is 8 hours a day common thing ??

    Hi,

I have been contracting for a few years now but never seen a job asking me to work more than 37.5 hours a week. One of the client I was working had a 35 hours week only. The new client seems to ask for a 8 hours a day, so 40 hours a week.

Is this very common across the land or is this client being unusual.

    TIA
    Cheers

I have never been on a gig less than 8 hours a day. I think all IBs specify that.

    But that is a minimum......

      Oh yes

      Public Sector - 35 hours a week
Australia or media companies are usually 37.5
ANy other consultancy, finance - 40 hours (ON paper)

Even on 35, 37.5 hours a week contracts, I could work (and get paid for) up to 40 hours.

Since living in CH, 8 hours days is the norm. ( not including lunch ). Nestlé had a 9 hour working day on their Globe project. I think that was just to cover how long it took the pc to boot up...

Fortunately, my current client isn't bothered about how long I'm in the office, so long as the work is done.

37.5 hours a week for me, but as I'm on an hourly rate I usually put in 40 hours minimum.

Indeed. 8 hours is commonly known as a "half day" in some places I've been.

fine if you're billing by the hour...

I wish. The IBs wised up to that many years ago.

On a contract with an IB right now - Id say most IT contractors and staff do between 8 - 10 hours a day.

The business is another matter though..

Have you worked for a bank (in IT) and done more than 10 hours on a daily rate?
