Things are always quiet in the run up to Christmas so I can't say if it's as bad as 2001. If I'm still out of a job in mid-Feb then it'll be as bad but I'm not worrying yet...

Agree with this - I think by end of Feb we will all know for sure if it IS bad in which case I think till end of the Year everyone will be in a similar boat.

Just glad I got a huge rainy day fund to right off next year WORSE case but god damn I dont want to use it for that long!

I've always been waiting for the day someone (pref. Bill Gates) puts their hand up and goes 'OK, really, computers, big waste of time and money? I think we should go back to having a typing pool and those cool little glass tube things that use air pressure to fire memos around the building'.

It'd be a great way to save money and time, and we could all go off and do something more meaningful and rewarding.

If you are referring to my comments... back when I was working the City I did a small feasibility study and came to the conclusion that replacing the entire IT department with a team of typists, filers, and office runners would be just as efficient* and a hell of a lot less expensive.

Lets be honest, if computers are so great (and mobile phones for that matter) why aren't we all working 3 days a week? The paperless office - remember that novelty idea? How come we are now working harder and longer than *before* we had this technology????

I.T., mobile phones, PDAs etc - gigantic time and money waster.

Oh, and have you ever seen those glass tube things from the 70's that fire capsules around the building with documents in them??? Really really cool. Much more fun than network cables...

*things have changed since then - responding to email is taking up so much of peoples worktime it would now be more efficient

You haven't taken into consideration the majority of IT projects that are cancelled or end in abject failure.
