I'm starting to recognise some similarities between all the fishing calls I'm getting, namely:
1. The job spec is very hazy and even changes during the conversation - eg:
Pimp - "I got your CV and wondered if you were interested in a CCNA/CCNP"
Me - "Can I just stop you there, I wouldn't really consider myself for and put myself forward for a more senior network role"
Pimp - "Oh no it's a windows role looking after AD/exchange and [insert most of the opening paragraph of my CV]"
2. They ask you what your rate is and quote you a fair bit above ending the question with "how does that sound?"
3. They might ask you more questions about your preferred type of role, where your ideal location etc then as if by magic
"Well this role is [insert the ideal role you just told them] based in [ideal location/down the road from where you live]"... "how does that sound?"
4. When they've got you in 'too good to be true' mode they start on the urgency. They might tell you that they haven't posted the ad up yet but came across your CV in their database and thought they'd get you in early.
They will also say that the client is interviewing in the next few days so they'd like to get your CV over ASAP.
So with you all excited about this absolutely perfect role just 5 minutes down the road that is paying over your usual rate they'll start the fishing questions, usually in this order:
"Just so we know what we're up against do you have any other interviews or offers at the moment?"
If yes they obviously need as many names and details as possible.
Then last but not least it's the old favourite:
"Well I'm happy to forward your CV ASAP...... but before I do I just need 2....."
Anyone got anything to add? I'm sure I missed a few.
We only have so much time in the day to talk to pimps, especially when not on the bench and there's only so much time we can spend outside on the phone.
Here's quite a good article I found on 'lead genning'
Wouldn't it be nice to be able to spot it before the phone even rang so we didn't even have to answer it
