    opensource dev & freelancer sites

Has anyone used the eLance, rentacoder etc. sites? I know this is asked frequently but I can't recall who used them.

Last time I looked it was bids of less than 2 rupees.

Just wondered if there was any scope for earning a modest crust from home in between gigs etc.

    Ta.

You could make more with a paper round. If you look at the requirements and the winning bids then you should see you will be working for next to nothing.

There is a thread about this from no so long ago.

Yeah, you're better off spending 5 years developing a Super Killer App. Some ideas may actually come to fruition quicker, but won't be anywhere near as entertaining to the rest of CUK.

I'd rather get a 'job' rubbing sun tan oil onto babes on beaches. The canaries are supposed to be warm this time of year if you don't fancy going further afield.

I think it highlighted a rentacoder offer to develop a new O/S for about 30k.

Maybe M$ were looking for someone to write Windows 7, as they haven't got a clue themselves. 30k sounds a bit much for that though. Just decompile XP and add a different explorer gui on top.

Like I always say in these threads, there IS decent work to be had on these sites, BUT it is hard to find with all the dross, and you probably need to expect to earn more like permie money than contractor money. There are people who want software writing who are actually put off by Asian guys bidding $10/hr having heard horror stories from other people.

If you've nothing better to do, sign up for the mailing lists to get only the high-budget projects on rentacoder, getafreelancer and other sites and then try to establish communication with them... 90% of bidders just make a 2-line pitch and a bid, if you can demonstrate you are professional and mean business, you can get ahead.

You could also try and win projects and then subcontract the development work to the really cheap guys you are bidding against... some of them are pretty decent... and do 5 projects at once.
