    VAT & Agencies

If you get work through an agency, then does this mean you can charge them VAT regardless of whether the end client is VAT registered? This would be rare when the client is a large company, but as a freelancer my clients can include startups and individuals who haven't got as far as VAT registration.

If you are VAT registered then charge VAT. If they are not VAT registered, they cannot offset it on the VAT return but that's their tough luck, not yours...
    Older and ...well, just older!!

Charging VAT isn't an option. If you are VAT registered, you have to charge VAT no matter who the customer is*.

*Assuming we're talking about UK/EU companies.
Will work inside IR35. Or for food.

Yes I agree, as long as we are talking about the supply of your services and not something else.
