    Overseas Contract in UAE

Can you help, I've seen a contract in Dubai, pretty good as I've got all the skills described in the JD.

As for take home pay and taxes the job is advertised as tax free at £1000+/day. Does tax free mean 0% tax? in reality won't I still have to pay medical insureance over there and NI insurance over here.

I fully intent to come back as it's only a 12 month contract.

    thoughts please.

Tax-free in Dubai means that - 0% - but if you are only going for 12 months you will not escape the UK tax man.

Can't he keep the money in an offshore account? Surely if out of country for most of the year then will not attract UK tax?

These days you have to be out of the country from 6th April to 6th April the following year to be tax free. If you go out in October 08 you will still need to be out of the UK on April 6th 2010 to qualify for tax free status. I believe you are entitled to return to the UK for 30 days in that period. However, IANAA.

I forgot to say, reports from friends in the UAE are telling me there is a massive shortage of accomodation to rent so rents are sky high and that is, if you can find somewhere. Negotiate carefully.

Non resident - tax fee status

It's actually a bit more than Fred suggests. You have to be out of the country AND employed for the full tax year to qualify for the non resident status. Also you can't spend more than 90 days a year in the UK (averaged over a 4 year period). A day being defined as staying at midnight in the UK.

The non resident status can be granted mid tax year depending on how you complete the P85 form when you leave the country. You are then tax free on foreign income from that date, however you still need to meet the full tax year rule (absent AND working) otherwise you'll become liable when you return.

The P86 completed when you return asks for the foreign employment details, start date/end date etc.

I understood it as being if he was in the UK for more than 183 days in a tax year then he'd be classed as a UK resident for that year in terms of tax. So if the OP left in November 1st and returned 12 months later I think he'd be OK., although I could be wrong.
