Current IT Skills Shortage - whats it all about?

Been reading up on this in PC mags like computer weekly recently. Is there an actual skill shortage now or is this something that is going to happen a few years down the line? What impact will it have on us contractors - surely it must be a good thing for us as there will be more jobs to go around and hopefully a lift in pay rates.

    Any thoughts?

Contracting disappears the way we know it , all jobs go to India, perm jobs at hosting providers become the norm , IT further cements as a low-profile clerk work . Big powerful corporations controlling all services and Internet access. Controctors jobless and forced to become permies under the pressure of big Cos. Ir35 applied retrospectively. Contractors discredited by CUK members / threads being exposed on BBC...

There is a massive shortage of IT workers in the UK willing to work for £10/hr, that have 10+ yrs of experience, willing to work 60 hr weeks and have a solid education background.

But there are loads of people like this in India.

Hence the Big Co's crow on about "IT skills shortages" and the government dish out work permits in their millions.

Now do you see what it is all about?

IT Skills are not on the list of shortages used by the people vetting visa applications. PCG got them taken off when nobody could prove there was one.
          Blog? What blog...?

The ‘skills shortage’ will continue until the government accepts a bigger bribe to decree that there isn’t one or they get so greedy that the amount of the bribe is equal to the amount that companies save by importing workers rather that employ local ones.
How did this happen? Who's to blame? Well certainly there are those more responsible than others, and they will be held accountable, but again truth be told, if you're looking for the guilty, you need only look into a mirror.

Might as well move to India then. Atleast the weather will be better there.

Does not apply to Intra-Company Transfers. UK client just sets up pretend empty office in Bangalore as a subsidiary, and sorted, as many visas as needed.

i think the Injuns charge about 10.50 an hour now and are no longer competitive...the guys i've met that come over here (that are any good) are usually pretty shrewd business men (like most Indians). I can tell you they don't push the price down, they're as mercanary as us. They usually stay here once they're over here as well so have same living costs...

I'm working at a company that is now insourcing after 10 years of expensive outsource - IBM - Fujitsu etc etc...think it runs in waves really, new bods new ideas (that aren't really that new) - have a shake up etc etc, outsourcing was predicted to be the end of the world 7 or 8 years ago..

There are lots of problems with outsourcing that will keep us in work...

If you very good at what you do, you'll always be alright.
