Notice period concerns on a new contract

I'm looking for a little advice.

I have verbally agreed to start a new contract on monday, but having just read the T&C's from the agency it would seem I am not allowed to give notice to the contract at any period and the client can give me 1 week. I have yet to sign the contract as it is still being drawn up.

The contract is for a 5 month period, and although I am happy to work this contract, I am actively seeking permanent employment.

I am concerned that should say 6 weeks down the line the opportunity arises to move to another role I am breaking my contract and the agency could pursue legal action.

    Your thoughts please.

You could try getting the agency to change it, although I doubt they would because it's not in their interest sending a contractor to a client who is thinking of jumping ship mid project.

If you want this contract, my advice is to just accept it and stop your search for jobs until you are at least 3 months into it.

Insist on equal notice clauses. I've always done it and it got the changes made when necessary. It's never stopped me from getting a contract. Always think of yourself first, then the client, then the agency.

It is probably the same company I am contracted to and is standard policy. I have not known anyone negotiate around it initially, although I am aware of people negotiated it out at subsequent renewals. I am not aware of anyone breaking such a contract and therefore testing the consequences.
If I was you, and you are in any doubt, I would not take it.

WHS. I has exactly the same with no notice on my side and 2 weeks for client.
I insisted that I wanted equal notice clauses and they changed it ( after giving me some rubbish that they dont usually do it blah blah blah ).

Key is think about number 1 ( you ). Dont tie yourself to something you are not really keen on.

I think its a contract where I am now - and I have seen people leave mid-term - after negotiation with the client. The client was trying to cut costs, so it helped.
If it is the same place - no you are unlikely to get terms renegotiated.
Do tell us - does the contract number start HIT??? though. Then we know if we are talking about the same agency

                Second that.

They try every time, I say no, they moan, I say fine no contract, they give in.

Another example of a priviliged twit that has no concept of customer service. Thank goodness for Indian software houses.
Let us not forget EU open doors immigration benefits IT contractors more than anyone
