CV in at client from 2 agencies

2 or 3 months ago I applied for a contract position through an agency and was under the impression that it hadn't been progressed with the client (not even sure if it went from the agent to them at all).

The same position appeared last week with a different agency, one who seems to have a relationship with the client, so I thought I may as well apply again as I've redeveloped my CV since I last applied and thought it would be worth retrying.

Agent has just called after being told the client already has my CV from another agency & that it was supplied recently.

Agent wants me to mail him confirming that he's the only agent representing me and that I haven't applied through anyone else.

As far as I'm concerned I *do* want him representing me as he at least seems to be having some form of conversation with the client! But is it kosher to do so in this situation?

    Noob.

That's your choice, you can choose which agent you wish to use and I have done this before in much the same manner.

Agent 1 will of course call you when the client tells him to f*** off, and he will give you an earful, but so what.

Agent 2 is just playing his game and trying to get your business. He doesn't care about you either but so long as the game plan suits both of you there's no harm in proceeding.

Besides, Agent 1 took 3 months and never responded to you. That's pretty poor form and enough ground for you to shake him out of the equation.

If you didn't confirm to first agent that they were solely representing you then, to me at least, it's open season...
      Older and ...well, just older!!

        Have you heard the expression...

'Previous applicants need not bother applying'?

As above, the previous agent never got back to me, leaving me to assume my CV didn't go forward. Also, there's no mail trail where I confirmed to the agent to send my CV in to the client (which I've got for nearly every other application I've done and I understand that's a requirement for the agencies anyway under the employment agency legislation etc).

ALWAYS get a reference number for the role. That way when Agent 2 calls you can cross reference, then call Agent 1 back and state the position. Agent 1 will not be happy that you are fecking him over, and may make your life with the client difficult. Besides, if the client has had your CV and not called Agent 1 back, then have you even got the interview?! Agent 1 would have been straight on the phone if the client wanted you in....

I'm a LOT more organised now, but this was actually the first contract I applied for and all I can find in reference is an email from the original agency with job details & my own spreadsheet notes on rate/contacts etc. I've got nothing that suggests I was put forward to the client, so the original agency is at fault anyway.

There is no harm in going for this role again. However as the client has already seen your profile and nothing came of it, the outcome will be same as before - nowt. And you probably won't hear from this agent again either.

Tip 2. Always get a definitive yes/no as to whether or not you have been put forward. That way it makes it easier to manage the situation above, also you know which agents are worth calling to follow up on the role. As long as you're candid about it the agent will tell you if you have(n't) been put forward - and if you haven't just tell them that you have another agency willing to do it.
