    Meaning of 'Employment Business'

    Hi

I am considering entering the contract market as redundancy looms.

I notice that many agencies make a point of declaring that they are acting as an Employment Business.

What does this mean, and what are the implications for a contractor?

Great, that'll be one less permie to compete with.

Wouldn't be worrying about agency semantics - it's can they get you a job, that counts, and that's questionable now.

Seriously, we're a savvy bunch and when talk turns to finding a permie job to tide us over, it's bad.

To try and be helpful for a moment, the term means recruitment agencies.

There are some DTI (or whatever it is called now) rules that have put restrictions on how they can operate in recent years. For the most part, you needn't be concerned.

The client contacts them because they need resources, they advertise the roles, they sift the CVs that come in and send a few to the client. Client picks a few to interview, and picks the ones that they want on board.

They invoice the client for the work done, the contractors invoice them.

        Just like employing temps really.

        Now I sound like Denny.
