Car - What should i do?

    Hi

I am taking up a contract in Ireland where i need to rent a digs etc (which i assume is paid through my company?)

I have a family car at home but was considering buying a new family sallon and me taking the current car to Ireland with me.

I am VAT reg so would it be better me leasing a van or even buying something like this through the comapny and claim the vat..possible?

    Yep, you can do that.

Isn't there a problem with renting a car; that HMRC regard this as a taxable benefit? i.e. you use the car for business purposes, but as you have it in the evening you could use it to go to the shops/pub.

Not sure if this extends to lease though..

Either way you now have the use of a car through the company. So that's a company car.

You really don't want one of those if you've got any sense.

Pickup truck/Van or low emissions (less than 120g/km) car are the only real options

Vans are not a great idea since last April either. If you have any significant private use it's £3000 BIK + another £500 fuel BIK. Better generally to buy a cheap car yourself and claim the mileage.
