    Contracting while at uni ?

    Hi Everyone,

i am new to contracting i just got my first temp contract job only for 2 days next weeks thats it but the chap asked me are you with a umbrella company or Ltd or do you want PAYE . I said PAYE and i know its a only for the 2 days next week then back to job hunting but i am student so i was thinking once i get 2-3 contracts under my belt to setup my own LTD .

At the moment i only go uni 1 day aweek and i am free 4days. Thats a fulltime degree lol

Techincally i finsh my degree in June but i will have a final year project hanging over me which is due in Dec 2008 so i will be a partial graduate lol How do i go about looking for a job can i work 5 days a week because i don't need to attend uni and also you have to do the project work on your own.

What do you think ltd or PAYE for a student lol

Thanks for you help people !

If you aren't going to earn more than the minimum tax threshold (£5k and a bit) then I'd go PAYE since you won't pay income tax on it anyway.

If it's going to be more, you plan to do it for a while, and you will be earning enough to cover accounting costs etc. then go Ltd.

I didn't see anything funny in your post. Certainly not enough to lol 3 times.

To those with more experience, isn't it possible to work as a sole trader doing contract work just like you can for other types of self-employment? I'm sure it's not as good tax-wise but if you're not doing it full time it would save time and money setting up a company and employing an accountant.

This may seem a little harsh, especially as we are not in General, but are punctuation and grammar no longer required at Uni?

I'm not bothered about the spelling but:
        • lol is not a valid substitute for a full stop
        • the personal pronoun 'I' should be capitalised
        • this --> ' <-- is called an 'apostrophe' - learn about its use
        • quotation marks help; you can use 'blah' or "blah"

How do i go about looking for a job
Learning to write might be a useful prerequisite to finding work.

And since I can't be arsed to decode your waffle, I cannot give you a relevant and helpful response. That's called "cause and effect".

The problem is finding someone who will deal with a sole trader, as under the current tax regime,if you skip out on paying your tax, there is a chance that the client could be hit for it. That's why agencies insist on Ltd, umbrella or PAYE.

When I was at Uni, I did some contracting to ICI and just declared it, but it was tax free anyway. These days, you need to have a better payment mechanism as they are a bit worried about getting hit for your tax.

2 days work does not make you a contractor. You got 2 days temping work, nice if you can get it as a student. As the previous poster says unless you can earn significantly over the personal allowance, keep it simple with PAYE. Most temps do this. Ltd co operation is not worth the hassle unless you are earning significants sums of money.

Pot, kettle, and black spring to mind!

Also it is quite old fashioned to use two spaces after a full stop, Wikipedia gives an explanation of this, and it is also 'cause and effect' as you are not quoting someone.

Strictly speaking, the first 3 items in the list should have had semi-colon terminators and the final one a full stop.

It is not incorrect to use two spaces after a full stop. I was taught to type on manual typewriters and in those days it was the convention. I still find it clearer to read, especially in technical text.

Agreed, in the UK we tend to use single quote marks for quotes in publishing, so it should have been 'cause and effect'.

If that is what you are pulling me up on, I don't feel too bad.
