Why are you so keen to work? You've got a free place to live, a woman on demand, and for about 10GBP a day in New York you could live and eat like The King (uh-huh-huh). Save up a couple of weeks' wages before you go and have the best year of your life.

What if you require a little more than sleeping, eating and existence?

      What about challenges?

I lived there for four years. You've got two (or three) options really. You could open your business in the US and employ yourself, then try to fond contracts - don't know anyone who's done this, but apparently it's possible. You can get sponsored. Or you can marry your girlfirend and get a visa off her back ;-)

As for contracting - there virtually is no contract market there. Just doesn't work like that. So if you're serious then start looking at permy and sponsorship.

          Liz of BritishAmericanTax.com says

"It (Ltd Company) allows you to do international trade, since many other countries have stiff rules about allowing a foreign worker to provide services and comparitivly relaxed rules about a company providing the exact same services. The US is one particular country where this is true.
          "

!? There's tons of contract (call yourself a consultant) work in New York. I've been over a couple of times and fixed things up pretty easily. Or do you mean the 1706/1099 thing which is annoying like !R35?

              Probably harder for foreigners though.

I mean in the sense that we do contracts here - sign on for 6 months etc. That market doesn't really exist in any large numbers - I know cause I spent my last 6 months in NYC looking for it!

Short term consultancy type stuff yes, actual 6 month contracts, working for firms etc not much of it at all. In my 6 months looking I saw one. Maybe other fields are different - but in the networking areana definitly not.

thanks for replies, doesnt seem as simple as I thought, I had a look on jobserve and pretty much no contract work out there doing what I do, some contracts in Jersey City though. Its only for a year so I will look at the permy route my gf boss over there said he would see what he could do, she is working in the same sector as me so I should be able to get something. I could take a year out but I recon I would get bored on my own while she works.

Im going for a dump now.
