    Taking on staff

I am considering advertising on my website, to recruit for future vacanicies.
So I could deploy staff to contracts as & when I matched a cv to an advertised vacancy on the job boards etc.

My plans is pay the staff a couple of pounds less that I can invoice there time for with agencies, then pocket the difference.

Has anbody done this before ? if so how complicated can it be.

Depends how you do it. If you take on permanent staff then you have to pay them wheteher you have work for them or not. If you take on contractors then you are competeing against agencies with the same job paying a higher rate because of your cut.

It also means you have to start worrying about things like cash flow since you have to pay your people regardless of whether you have paid or not.

I can't imagine many agencies are going to want to play along either, since it involves them signing up to agreements with you before they even get to send the candidate for interview. Far easier for them just to find the candidate directly.

If you can find the jobs direct then all well and good, you are setting up as an agent charging commission just like they do.

You will need more than "a couple of pounds" difference to cover the costs, whether you take on employees or act as a second-line agency.

Either way you will be the employer and therefore responsible for holiday pay (currently 10% of wage), employees NI (12.8% of wage after the first £100), employers liability insurance, data protection registration, health & safety etc.

Unless you are thinking of recruiting subcontractors in which case you need to be able to prove their self-employed status to avoid getting hit with the liabilities outlined above...........

If you are taking on staff as employees you need to consider how likely they are to be out on secondment to a client at any given time, how you will fund pay for any "down-time" when they are not out on hire, and indeed what they will do when they are not on hire. Will you be putting them on fixed-term contracts for example?

If you are intending acting as an agent you will need to ensure that you know about and comply with the agency regulations.

                  vacancies
                  their
                  anybody

Yes - I considered it a while back, but essentially you are taking on the agents at their own job. I know someone who does it, but no idea how good he is at it - all I can say is I hope he's a better agent than coder.

Probably not worth it, to be honest - how much time do you have available to be searching for jobs for people, when you could be posting on here? Not enough hours in the day.

I only back an idea if you're wearing a pinstripe suit and sensible tie. For that reason, I'm out.
