    Agency advice

    Hi all,

I am getting my act together on becoming a contractor. I've been reading up quite a lot on different subjects. One of the most important ones as I understood is the right agencies to deal with.

Some say you need to have arround 4-5 agencies on your list, but you have to make sure that they are good ones and not one of those "wild west cowboys".

Can anybody recommend me a good agency in London? And what do they charge?

An agency won't charge you, they take a fixed amount from the client or a percentage of your daily rate over and above what you know about.

Just plug away of Job Serve you'll soon find out which agents are good for you.

I'm currently with Knight Munro and find them excellent

I just go for whatever agency has the contract that I want. I dont care who they are as long as they get me a gig and pay my invoices.

I thought I covered that in the paying my invoices bit?

Look for the job first, then look at the agency advertising said 'job'. A cursory search should turn up some names of agencies who CUK-ers think are chiseling barstewards.

Do a search for "list of S3 agencies" on the boards and wherever possible avoid the ones that come up.

Having said that, the best agant is the one with the job you want. Just be prepared to negotiate over the contract terms, and walk away if you have to.

Oh, and no reputable agency will charge you for anything. Apart from anything else it is illegal for them to charge you for placing you in a job.

Quite right. Only exception is for modelling work but I don't think many contractors here will be going down that route...

                  (Speaking for myself ofcourse)
