I have just landed a contract to present a six part UK TV series on severe weather – this involves myself and my USA “Storm Chase” buddy. However I do have a question about billing. BTW The first episode will be to film and document the land falling (i.e. get into the eye) of a massive hurricane where ever in the world it may form. - even Japan!!!

FYI: I am using my VAT registered UK limited contracting company as an invoicing engine for the project.

Trouble is, how do I pass on the 50/50 split to my USA buddy? (who is not an employee)

My Bud runs a USA company himself and I will get him to invoice me for his time and services but I am not sure how that VAT works ??

So how do I bill my buddy and deal with the VAT side of things ??

Of course I will ask my accountant for advise in the morning – bit as ever I would like to know my options first!!

You don't charge VAT if the client is a non-EU based entity.

So your invoices to the US company will not have any VAT element.

This is my understanding.

Does you buddy run and US based business? If so, he can send you an invoice and again no VAT involved.


Make sure you have purchase orders, copies of all invoices and any receipts for costs/expenses involved.

Sounds good, just out of interest & being nosey, what kind of fee has been negotiated?
A one off or do you get a % of the initial screening + repeats.

TV is a wonderful goldmine I knew a bloke when I was at University who was a budding script writer. He sent a batch of six jokes to "the Russ Abbot show" (OK, it was a while ago), he sent in six two-liners, they used one.

He got a cheque for £38 for the original show.
He got a cheque for £19 for the repeat fees.

His prized possession though was the cheque for £1.48 that he got when the show was sold to 6 American TV networks.
