Been offered some work.. contract question

Hi all,

Just been offered some work direct with a client (approx 10 days), problem is its a friend of a friend, I know the guys and don't think they would pull a fast one. Unsure how to handle something though, hitting them with a contract pulled from PCG and modified would be overkill for a short piece of work (which may well lead to more) but on the other hand without a contract, should there be issues somewhere I am screwed aren't I..

Can anyone advise? Not sure how to handle this one..

doesn't need to be a contract - simple purchase order from said company and invoice from you upon completion.

however as it's "mates" of yours are they expecting to do it "cash in hand" or through the books ?

no I don't think it would be cash in hand, wouldn't be interested if it was. Its a worthwhile question that I will ask...

Yep, that's the way I work on small one-offs, too.

When I did this sort of thing I used a PCG template for a "letter of engagement" that just outlined the work and had some T&Cs, and then got the client to sign beforehand. You really want to be sure of things like payment terms.

Just logged in and looked for such a letter, can't see it though. Is it still there? Could be just the ticket..

It's the one listed as A05-11 T&Cs.

Got it thanks, that looks ideal actually. Not too heavy-weight for this type of work. Guessing this kinda of short defined piece of work is well and truly outside of IR35 too..

Set of signed t's and c's works for me. Never looked at the PCG templates. I've always wondered if PCG membership (don't get me wrong - I have it) is a pointer to not being in business 'proper'...

Perhaps they should change their name to Professional Legitimate Business not a Tax Avoidance Vehicle Group ?
