US looking at H1B visas their equivalent of our intra company transfer visas

I have never worked in the US, and reading that am unlikely to now, but it does look similar to what happened here in that tech companies said their wasn't enough skilled professionals, which to be fair was probably once true, and they just kept on issuing Visas when the companies should have been told to start training people.

You can understand why they are looking at changing this. The last US IT department I worked with there wasn't a single American in the building.

A pal of mine worked at a UK unicorn company, he was emplyee number 3, the first programmer they took on, and worked in the same small office as the 2 founders. The company grew fast and moved offices several times quite quickly eventually settling into a decent sized office over 4 floors. The 2 founders had fancy offices in the penthouse, and my friend worked in IT, literally in the basement. With all the layers of HR, sales and management between him and the 2 founders he once counted as friends.

To me, that sums up the attitude towards IT - we belong in the basement. Even though technology is driving all these businesses, they do not really have respect for their engineers. If we can be substituted for cheap labour on a dodgy visa, they will do it.

If we can be substituted with even cheaper AI that does not even need a visa and will work 24/7, they will do it too.
