I'd mostly stay at the Travelodge near Severn Bridge. Not sure that's a recommendation.

I did a couple of months down there at the beginning of last year and stayed in these serviced apartments

They will negotiate a good rate if you're staying for a while. They also have secure parking and are about 5 mins walk from the city centre (next to the novotel and right next to Temple Quay if that's any help).

My house is in Bristol. You don't live in Basingstoke do you ? We could swap houses.

Bristol depends on the area. You don't want to travel across the city during rush hour. If North Bristol - BAE / Rolls Royce. Look on the Gloucester Road or by the downs (big green bit North bristol) for a B&B.

If central, try Clifton (North) and walk to work (20 - 30 mins) into the centre.
Clifton & the downs area are nice.

If South Bristol then I don't no I'm afraid.

I used to drive to Bristol Parkway (Stoke Gifford to the north of the city) and catch a train to Temple Meads (in the centre). That's probably the quickest way in and out of the city if you don't want to stay there.

Agreed. The traffic in Bristol suffers from two things - a lack of a coherent public transport system and a council that is deliberately trying to put of people driving into town (a recent survey found that 20% of the cars in town during the day are trying to park or are moving from one parking spot to another...). So the roads don't work, the buses only work radially and bus lanes stop after a hundred yards at the next traffic jam. I have been known to get to Paddington from Bath quicker than my wife gets from home (5 miles outside the city) to the BRI in the centre.

So stay somewhere in shouting range of work if at all possible!

I was based in Bristol for 4 and a half yrs. I reakon I've stayed in every hotel in the area. I'd say best-buys are.......

actually I can't think of any that were really good. Here's some that were ok though.

Premier Lodge at Cribbs Causeway - its fairly new
Tortworth Court (M5 Jn 14) - most interesting
Days Inn (Michaelwood services) - cheapest
Travelodge in downtown Bristol - best location
Corus on Beggars Bush Lane - short ride into Clifton
Hilton near Aztec West

I've been over there a few times recently - know the following:

Thistle Hotel - v central, comfy, great spa, hot tub, pool etc.
Holiday Inn - not with a 10ft bargepole.
Ibis - brand new, like any other Ibis anywhere, ok really.
Jury's Inn - ok, no complaints re room (get the ones at the back away from the riverside - too noisy otherwise). breakfast is bog std.
