    Investment Banking

Hope some of you fellow CUKers can help me.

I need to learn quickly about investment banking as I may get an interview for a db and reporting gig. Can any of you suggest some sources that will enable to convince the client I know what I am talking about?

Can't help, but if you get any info I'd be interested in hearing it too! I'm in Corporate Banking and fancy a move into Investment Banking...

How about getting a job and experience in INvestment Banking, worked for most people in your position.

Seriously it's a specialised industry you can't just bluff it.

Unless you've got a skill they can't get from an insider you won't get the role no matter how good you are. The only sure fire to get experience is go permie for a year in a consultancy that does this work and then leave.

The reason the rates are high in IB isn't because its difficult it's because the 'resource pool' is so limited.

I've been working in the IT dept. of this big IB for the past couple of years and I don't believe that you need a whole deal of knowledge to get in. Once in you can pick up things as you go along and learn as you need. Your primary technical skill is what you should sell yourself on, and how it can be applied in IB. It helps if you have a healthy interest in finance.

It depends also on which area of IB you are entering. Is it fund mgmt, trading, corporate actions etc etc?

Also I've heard that the industry is very incestuous... banks only tend to look at contractors who have worked in other banks before.

I was fortunate in that I work in a very specialised technical product, so I got in that way, on a good enough rate too.

        Good luck !

Is it in Credit Risk ?

Regardless IB is a massive area you need to find out the what specific area of banking it is middle office, front office and most what importantly what product area and then you can tailor your research.

Ive worked in IB MI for the last 8 years and I would say I only know the tip of the iceburg.

Yes, it is. I found that out after posting. I guess that restricts the area a bit..
