If experienced people are looking at more than 2-3 months benched it's time for all of us to re-evaluate if contracting is worthwhile.

Doesn't matter how experienced they are, they are still driven by clients requirements which is totally out of their control so a warchest essential however skilled.

+1 but equally I have twice in this period of contracting (2012 onwards) taken 3 months bench time to get exactly the role I wanted (one that allows me to progress the way I want my career to).. The first allowed me to work in the technology I wanted to learn, the last allowed me to fill in the parts of my skillset that appeared to be missing...

Two to three months between contracts is quite common if you have the misfortune to finish one just before the Summer.

I think the Permanent market is ok at the moment but post crash in 08-09 recruitment of contractors and permanent people was equally as bad if memory serves. Historically it isn't always an option to get a permanent job if things go badly contracting.
