I've always had a long one (ooer) and I've never had an issue lining up work. Maybe it's been binned often
I don't know how techies especially can get a CV to be 2 pages long unless you customise it for each role. When I'm hiring I hate short CV's and also the CV's that are obviously customised to the role on offer. You can't interview everyone so need the experience written down.
I've just had a case where my CV long CV has probably worked in my favour. The client wanted CV's sent across without the applicants seeing what the job spec was - only receiving the job spec once they had liked my CV. The contract advert was minimalist too
.
Mine is currently 8 pages. It used to be 12 or so
.
My thinking is provide more information and they can read what from they want from it. I'd be surprised if anyone really bins a CV for being too long when they could just read the first few pages if they're more interested in just the recent experience.Comment

Well you should always be customizing it for each role. It makes it much easier for the client/agent to see the skills that are relevant for the gig. I'd say you are thinking about it with a permie mindset.Originally posted by SuperZ View PostI've always had a long one (ooer) and I've never had an issue lining up work. Maybe it's been binned often

Possibly but that's pretty uncommon.I've just had a case where my CV long CV has probably worked in my favour. The client wanted CV's sent across without the applicants seeing what the job spec was - only receiving the job spec once they had liked my CV. The contract advert was minimalist too
But they don't have time to read from it what they want. You have to be direct and to the point else they will move on to the next one, particularly with agents. They may not bin it just because of that but there will be much mirth and pisstake when it comes in. You are right, they will get what they want from the first few pages... So why the other 4 or 5 pages? IMO those extra pages will be doing you much more harm than benefit.Mine is currently 8 pages. It used to be 12 or so

Everytime we discuss CV lengths one person will go against all known convention and wisdom and say my CV gets me gig's. It maybe but it's not the best way and in many cases it's a strange attitude to take to stick to your guns and ignore the audience. It's not what you think of the CV that counts. You have to give what your audience wants and in a vast number of cases that's a shortish, sharp and concise CV.
I'd be interested to see you attend the CV webinar and whether or not you'll accept any of the feedback from it.'CUK forum personality of 2011 - Winner - Yes really!!!!

Always happy to consider other views. Some of us are just natural contrarians
.
So what do you do? Show detail for only has x years or x contracts, then change the detail depending on the contract you're submitting the CV in for?Last edited by SuperZ; 22 June 2016, 07:36.Comment
