Clearly you do not have a family, dependents, friends, relatives etc etc who you like to socialise with! Money is not everything by a long way.

On the contrary ... I do have family, dependents, relatives and most of my friends live locally to me... family and dependents is the reason am willing to travel to pay for my commitments, I can't afford to be out of work for months on end.

I self benched at the end of April as the programme I was working on stalled (short of cash, needed to replan) and I didn't fancy sitting around scratching my backside trying to pretend I was busy. Idea was to take most of the Summer off and look for a new role come August.

Seems I'm just as efficient at home as at the office and I've finished most of the jobs I was looking to do around the house. As such, updated my LinkedIn page and CV today with idea of kicking off a new contract some time in June.

be interesting to see how badly Brexit has effected the market for the kind of work I do ...

I need to have a decent wodge of time off myself. Been working with hardly a break for the last three years or so and took this week off only to find myself ill, so no overseas sun for me. but the market is so strange and I wonder when might be the best time of the year to take, say, 3 months off. I might return and find other people eating my dinner.

I think best time to take 3 months off is around Aug / July and Xmas period... not much recruiting happens then.
So take mid Nov to mid Feb or mid June to mid Sept

Good for you your lucky you have the luxury of that many of us do not. I am not having a go but you cannot assume every other contractor unwilling to travel or unable to is as flexible. It all boils done to the same thing anyway few roles & lots of benchwarmers chasing them hence the number of posts on here!

hmmmm this kind of attitude maybe the reason you are benched for so long... you got to follow the job, I know it can be hard moving sometime, but we all had to do it at some point or another.

For a good paying contract, I can work anywhere in UK or Europe but can't be bothered to up sticks for a permie role.
it doesn't make financial sense because of living away expenses.

Rates. Forgive me if this has already been discussed earlier in the thread. I've nothing to do today but moan.
Was contacted about a role with a big pharma about 2 months ago. Around the 400 mark. Contacted about the same (or very similar) role this week and it's £100 a day less. But I suppose they can do exactly what they like with so many people on the market.
