I usually go into attack mode due to years living in shared houses when constant p*sstaking was the norm but I understand if this isnt natural for people.

When this isn't the best option, when this has happened (very rarely) I have tended to be friendly and give zero indication that this is bothering me or try to justify it OR rub their noses in it.
One t**t thought I was his mate and invited me to his wedding, I couldn't stand the top hat but I wouldn't give him the satisfaction of knowing he was getting to me, I needed his assistance from time to time and he properly made a compliment out of helping.
Another girl who had been laying it on thick thought I liked her and made it clear she felt the same.....guess again, I couldn't stand her.
All part of the game for me, need to cancel out any possible impact on revenue generation, everything else is details and temporary.

When I get teased by client staff about my driving a BMW I always tell them

"Oh. I use it as a run around.

      <pause>

      On my private island".

      That seems to amuse them.

I can't say I've ever been too bothered about what time other people come and go and I've never had anyone pull me up for same, but if I did I think the appropriate line would be:

I'll start explaining myself to you when you start paying my salary.

Got a problem with that? If so, raise it with your line manager. Ahem.

I know it's a strange concept for you but he's advocating being nice to permies.

I remember when I first started contracting years ago. I'd left a perm job with a company car and bought myself a new car. Lemon yellow hyundai coupe. I liked it anyway.

They werent that expensive to be honest (because it was hyundai) but it did look expensive at least. Had a private plate too - not an expensive one just one of the DVLA ones that was £200 or something.

So anyway, worked with this dutch guy. Nice fella, used to go to canteen together etc. really friendly. Until he saw me get out of the car one morning.

He came over to my desk and said can't believe you've got that car and you waste money on a private plate.

Blanked me and never spoke to me again. Really weird.

I never found out why he took offence but I thought maybe he had financial problems and was a bit peed off that there was a contractor there who looked like he had a flash motor.

Isn't it in the contractor handbook that you don't turn up at a client site in a car more flashy than the average permie one in the car park?

I learnt that in the early years when I turned up in a brand new Lotus (cost the same as a top spec mini does these days so not exactly a supercar) a few months into a contract. Ok, so having to reverse down the ramp into the car park as the front splitter was too low drew a bit more attention than I was expecting, but after just the one day of comments I never took it on site again.

Though even an 8 year old 'banger' sometimes seems to confuse the stupid when they think it may cost loads new but fail to factor in the depreciation of a big engined petrol barge.

I no longer give a crap when they come out with anything sarcastic out of jealousy. I just give them the smuggest grin I can muster at the time and keep schtum. The only way to win is not to play.
Maybe tomorrow, I'll want to settle down. Until tomorrow, I'll just keep moving on.
