    Yes.

"I like leap years, an extra day billing and all that."

Should shut the shirt front up. (getting the hang of this cockney rhyming slang now I've been down here a while)
The greatest trick the devil ever pulled was convincing the world that he didn't exist

Be nice to everyone. Like, really nice. Bring in snacks and offer them around. Be super polite.

Be really nice to him, not in a sarcastic way - as genuinely as possible.

Inform a higherup that you're having a lot of disagreements and you're trying to be really nice to him to see if you can fix things but you have some concerns and you're looking for advice.

Continue to be really nice to him publically, as well as everyone else at the company.

Whenever you're alone with him, in a corridor, or alone in the office, tell him you will gut him like a nibbly pig for his tulipstain attitude and that he is a piece of tulip that you wish you could scrape off your boot. You are better than him, you are more successful than him, you have a better lifestyle than him, and he's a worthless sack of tulip. He will never amount to anything and and all he does all day is whine and complain like the little bitch that he is.

Keep doing this until he has a full blown public meltdown, practice your wtf innocent complete lack of comprehension where-did-this-come-from look.

No-one will listen to him ever again.

*Legal disclaimer: I do not endorse threats of violence this is totally in jest. But being really nice to someone in public and giving them a piece of your mind when in private is a good way to force someone to either shut up or escalate to a point where everyone else shuts them up.
Unless you're the lead dog, the scenery never changes.

Works quite well in movies, I'm afraid.

I haven't experienced this as a contractor, but my usual reaction to this sort of thing is to treat it as 'banter' and give it back in at least equal amounts.

This is probably terrible advice though.

@OP - Ignore the Walter Mitty types here.

What, in your opinion, is the right thing to do?
