I mean they might have something on the go somewhere else, right? Or is this another case of not trusting any agent, ever, to be on the level?
Ah, that's different. If you're already in at XYZ Co, ask them if they know who else is on the PSL as you'd been already approached by someone. If the one who originally submitted you isn't on the PSL, then you might still have a good chance of getting the interview rather than a speculative chance.

Got to play the game; they play every day and we only play it when we have to.

Sounds good and is another way of trying to determine who is on the level.

        unknown!

Also ... if you get hidden caller number on your phone when job searching do you answer it?

The last I had was a "how are you finding the market" time waster

I never answer no caller ID or number withheld calls unless I'm expecting a call from someone which I know uses them. A legit caller will leave voicemail and a contact number.

A lot of recruiters from recognisable outfits don't block their return though it's often a single shared number facing outside.

A lot of recruiters will just move onto the next CV from the pile that they have because they don't care, thereby ensuring that you don't hear about the role.

I'm happy to talk to agents when it's convenient to me, whether they ring on a withheld number or not.

              This again ^^

If you show quickly you know your stuff and won't have the wool pulled over your eyes you can have some quite interesting chats with agents and glean a bit of info out of them. Depends on whether you have time or can be bothered of course.

A withheld number isn't any sign of what the agent is like. A lot of organisations telephony systems seem to withhold the number by default. Used to get calls from the bank from withheld numbers.

I believe a good agent should withhold his number and the opening question should be "Is this a convenient time to talk?"

With a 5.5 inch screen strategically placed on a conference table you can do a great job of impeding your career progression.

Then they weren't interested enough in my my CV to be worth talking to. I'm not working in England; there doesn't seem to be enough going on or enough people doing IT contracting in my field that this is much of a risk.

I get far too much spam to pick up the phone to find out. My bank withholds and my mobile provider does. Again, if they're calling me about something important, they'll leave a message; otherwise they're just trying to sell me something, so no thanks.
